WHO rejects of hiding epidemic outbreak reports
MUZAFFARABAD—The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday denied
reports that it has been hiding the cases of ailments in quake hit areas
of Pakistan. The organization added that some cases were certainly seen
but they were controlled well in time with appropriate treatment.
The non-governmental organizations and sometimes senior UN officers too,
had been warning time to time after the earthquake in Pakistan that
hundreds of survivors might die of diseases due to the increasing cold.
In a visit to here in the perspective of the same reports, the WHO Chief
Dr Lee Yong Woop (ph) has not only expressed satisfaction that
anti-epidemic efforts were heading towards the right direction there but
also said that provision of tent and blankets to every body was a source
of happiness for the organization.
The WHO Director General is visiting the quake ravaged Muzaffarabad at a
time when the non-governmental organizations, providing medical relief
there, are saying that the WHO’s figures describe a totally different
situtatin from that of their observation, DG said. Dr. Woop said that it
can be argued but we have not closed out eyes and ears. If any major
incident occurs, everyone will see it.
He further said we do not try to hide anything. The government itself
will also pay attention to these repots. However I believe that there is
no major difference in the situation. Responding various question Woop
said we are not saying that no much reports have been reported but there
is a great difference eruption of an epidemic and treatment of diseases.
Epidemic means a lot of patients and this is not the situation here, he
marinated.
He further said he know there was too hot in daytime there however, in
the evening temperature falls even below zero, increasing difficulties
of the residents. He said everything can be seen with different
perspective, added that I am sure that this is a temporary arrangement,
which will certainly improve in the coming days so that they can spend
winter in a better way.
The living in camps is obviously better then staying at mountains under
the open sky, he said.—APP |
