Machine readable driving licenses in offing: SSP Traffic

ISLAMABAD—Islamabad traffic police is planning to introduce new computerized licence with a magnetic chip to track violation history of drivers.
Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police, Sultan Azam Taimuri told APP on Wednesday that all traffic offenses made by drivers would be recorded in this 'magnetic bar'.
He said that Traffic police is seriously looking into this new licensing system which would be introduced after approval of Inspector General Police. We are hopeful to finalize this new machine readable driving license system within fifteen days after the IGP's endorsement," the SSP said.
Sultan said we want to further improve the present traffic licensing system in Islamabad and if launching of this new system is permitted, it will help us introduce the point licensing system in the next phase.
I have contacted two or three companies to finalize the modalities the new system and all technical aspects are being reviewed in this regard," the SSP said. It is notable that facility of accessing a driver's record was not available even in the computerized driving licences being issued by Islamabad police for the last three years. Meanwhile, the Traffic police sources said after introduction of the new licensing system, all traffic posts in Islamabad District wold be interlinked with a central office where computerized recorded of challans would be maintained.—APP
