Creation from the womb of devastation

ISLAMABAD—Two lakes have developed in Chakkar area of Jhelum valley due to landslide from a huge mountain, Director General ISPR Major General Shaukat Sultan said Tuesday. These lakes have developed following the displacement of a high mountain in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake on October 8, blocking two nullahs — Karli and Tang — near Haitian Bala Tehsil of Muzaffarabad, he told a media briefing. Major General Shaukat Sultan said due to the blockage of the nullahs the upstream water was still flowing in and accumulating in the newly created reservoirs. He said the rise in water level was on an average of around two feet per day in the two lakes. On nullah Karli the lake is 337 feet wide and 80 feet deep while the lake on nullah Tang is 200 feet wide and around 50 feet deep, he added. The DG ISPR said various teams of national and international experts have carried out studies in the area that had attracted attention due to rising water levels in the lakes. “Pakistan army since the day one (Oct. 8) has been keeping an eye on these lakes (so) that these may not cause any devastating effect”, he said.—ISPR
