Series of management courses begin at PIEAS

ISLAMABAD—Scientists and engineers-the driving force of socio-economic change, must possess managerial skills in addition to their technical knowledge, said Member (Physical Sciences), Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission Dr. Masud Ahmad.
He was speaking at certificate awarding ceremony of the PAEC’s Management Course conducted at Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) - a technical education institution of PAEC here on Friday. He said technical path-breaking even at micro level has its own significance, but application of technology at bigger scale to solve national problems and cater local requirements is the way to self-sufficiency.
This theme has acquired a special urgency in the wake ofcompetitive global era, he added. For value addition of national raw resources, scientists and engineers must benefit from management science as a multiplier of their technical prowess towards effective input for national development, Dr. Masud said.
He said PAEC, as a nation building department, is engaged in evolution of high-yield crops, cancer treatment, provision of support services to the industry, nuclear power for sustainable development, mineral development and industrial research. The Member PAEC said to meet these mega tasks, it has embarked upon an ambitious programme of technical education in variety of areas at its own institutions. Imparting management skills to human resource is a vital need for an expansive vision and vast implementation capability.
He said graduates of PIEAS, which found its genesis in early 60s for self-reliance in nuclear-related education restricted by foreign universities and not available from local universities, are now contributing to the needs of strategic organizations of the country and have the privilege of serving them at leadership positions. PIEAS, a degree awarding institution, is undertaking education at MS, M.Phil and Ph.D. level in Medical Physics, Process Engineering, Material Engineering, System Engineering, IT and Nuclear Engineering. The commencement of management courses at its campus is a new addition to its academic activities, with the ultimate aim of creating a Planning and Management Division.—APP
