Prince Karim Aga Khan meets President

ISLAMABAD—President General Pervez Musharraf Thursday appreciated the
donations made by Prince Karim Aga Khan to help the people affected by
October’s earthquake and for the reconstruction of the devastated areas.
Talking to Prince Aga Khan, who called on him here, he also applauded
the efforts undertaken by the Aga Khan Development Network in the relief
assistance for the people in the earthquake affected areas. Prince Karim
Aga Khan is visiting Pakistan to express solidarity with the people in
the earthquake-affected areas that devastated parts of NWFP and Azad
Kashmir on October 8.
The Prince pledged an amount of US$ 50.3 million at the donors’
conference in Islamabad for the reconstruction of the affected areas.
Earlier Pakistan received relief assistance worth US$3 million. The Aga
Khan’s Azad Kashmir Health Services Organization has also set up 7 Camps
in the affected areas for the relief assistance alongwith medical teams
from the Aga Khan University. The Aga Khan Development Network, for the
past 30 years, has undertaken development assistance programmes in
health care and education sectors in the Northern Areas. The Aga Khan
Rural Support Programme in tandem with government’s efforts is working
on the poverty alleviation programmes for the people living in remote
Northern Areas and Chitral district. Regional and international matters
of mutual interest including Pakistan’s role in the war against terror,
situation in Afghanistan, composite dialogue with India and Middle East
situation also came under discussion.
