CDA completes first phase of spadework for building code

ISLAMABAD—The Capital Development Authority has completed first phase of spadework aimed at introducing a new building code in the wake of the October earthquake, a senior CDA official said Thursday.
In the first phase rules for quality assurance of construction material have been approved after throrough deliberations and these will become part of the planned mew building code. The rules provide that all building material such as sand, cement and steel will be prepared according to computerised specifications and proportions.
The focus will now shift to framing rules regarding layout plan and building map and in the third phase rules pertaining to issuances of completion and clearance certificate will be drafted.
The whole exercise will culminate into intoruduction of the new building code, which may take months, the CDA official said.
For the intervening period an interim system of checks has been put in place for current high-rise building projects in the federal capital, he added. He said the building code was being prepared in coordination with the National Engineering Services Pakistan (Pvt) Limited (NESPAK).
