Financially viable bodies urged to contribute towards development

ISLAMABAD—Senate Standing Committee on ports and shipping has called upon the financially viable organizations and businessmen to come forward and make their due contribution for the infrastructure development of the cities in which they do business.
The Senate Standing on ports and shipping met under the chairmanship of senator Gulshan Saeed and made this observation while having a briefing on the working and performance of the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and the ongoing project being executed by the KPT.
The committee was given a comprehensive briefing regarding the ongoing development programmes and projects of KPT including PAPCO pipeline, deep drought container berths, cargo village, port tower complex, food street, port town, port water jet, port club and bulk cargo terminal.
The members of the committee were of the view that it was social responsibility and they should come forward and assistant the government in fulfilling this gigantic task.
The committee was also apprized of the contribution made by KPT in various undergoing Tameer-e-Karachi projects like KPT underpass, KPT flyover, rehabilitation of MT Khan road, and M.A. Jinnah road Karachi.
The members of the committee noted with satisfaction that KPT made a significant contribution in accelerating the relief and rehabilitation efforts of the government to quake victims while monetary contribution of Rs. 14 million was made by KPT towards the relief funds.
The committee was further informed medical teams of KPT in Balakot and Buttle conducted 350 major and 750 minor operations whereas the plastic surgeon of KPT conducted the reconstructive surgery with skin grafting on children.
The meeting was attended besides the chairperson of the committee, senator Saeed by senator Muhammad Akram, Fauzia Fakhar-uz-Zaman Khan, Dr. Muhammad Ali Brohi, Muhammad Amin Dadabhoy, Tahir Iqbal, Liaquat Ali Bangulzai, sardar Mahtab Ahmed and Saadia Abbasi.
