8 more die as new death wave starts spiraling
ABBOTTABAD—Eight people including five children died Tuesday of harsh
chilly weather in the vicinity of Abbottabad as the October 8 devastated
earthquake paved way for more destruction, which left millions homeless
in the quake-ravaged zone. With the quake-torn areas of NWFP in grip of
heavy rain and snowfall, Balakot, Alai, Kala Dhaka and Batgram
localities were again jolted by a mild tremor early morning.
Saghir and Mudassir died of pneumonia in Alai locality while a girl
Nazneen in Kala Dhaka lost battle for life amid chilling weather.
Similarly, Khizar Hayat, Altaf, Muhammad Saghir, a woman and another
child died of intense chill as the temperature fell below freezing
point. As fatal diseases hunt quake-survivors amid reports that filed
hospitals, Ayub Medical Complex Abbottabad and hospitals in Mansehra had
witnessed the influx of patients of the quake-hit areas.
Relief and rehabilitation activities in the earthquake hit areas of
Balakot and Siran vallies are continuing with full pace. According to an
official release here Tuesday, 33 percent temporary shelters have been
constructed and provided to the quake affectees of nine Union Councils
of Tehsil Balakot and various villages and towns of Siran Valley
respectively.
While 1726 another temporary shelters would be constructed in few days
besides provision of the G.I. sheets to the residents of affected areas
so that they could protect themselves from the harsh cold. Army
personnel and local people are also helping in construction of temporary
shelters. Meanwhile in the Siran valley 1825 legal heirs of those killed
in the recent earthquake were provided with compensation amounts while
payment is being made to the owners of destroyed and damaged house at
Union Council by the revenue staff.
Moreover in some areas in Balakot the people have started digging out
debris of their collapsed houses. Army has started removing the rubbles
from the Balakot main bazar and markets is being dumped along banks of
Kunhar River passing by the destroyed Balakot city.
