Media plays positive role in gender violence issues: Nilofar
By Hina Kiyani

ISLAMABAD—Advisor to Prime Minister on Women Development Nilofar Bakhtiar has appreciated the role of media in highlighting issues relating to violence against women.
She was having a brief talk with media persons at close of a handing over ceremony of 265 packets of relief goods by All China Women's Federation to the Women Development Ministry here on Tuesday. However, she called upon the media to do more as victims of these incidents do not have direct access to the officers concerned and create awareness about concerned laws among the general public to check violence against women.
Besides, seminars and discussions, she said, some chapters vis-a-vis issues relating to violence against women were also being incorporated in syllabus of training programmes for the newly elected 24,000 women councilors and in the course for police cadets to sensitize and make them cognizant about these laws.
Referring to Vanni incident in Mianwali, the advisor said 14 people had been arrested in this connection, if found involved, they would be given exemplary punishment under the law.
She said that investigations were being conducted on the directives of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz who had taken serious note of the matter. Elaborating details of the measures to curb violence against women, the advisor said the government had already taken various steps such as that women should not be kept alone at night in police station.
