Pakistan to
acquire US radar system
ISLAMABAD—Pakistan has placed an order of $89 Million for six Mobile
Long-Range Radars from Lockheed Martin, the makers of F 16 fighter jets.
The deal is being made through US Air Force, officials at Pakistan Air
Force confirmed. Six long-range AN/TPS-77 transportable radar systems
will be provided under the Foreign Military Sale (FMS) contract with the
US, said Pakistan Air Force (PAF) spokesman Air Commodore Muhammad
Sarfaraz.
“The money and training costs would be deducted from the USD 3 billion
aid approved by US for Pakistan - it is part of the package announced by
US President earlier awaiting Congress approval,” Sarfaraz added.
Under the contract Lockheed Martin will not only provide the mobile
radar systems — but also support equipment; spare and repair parts;
publications and technical data; personnel training and equipment; and
logistical support services to Pakistan.
“The new radars will provide more responsive and timely information for
Air Defence Operations (ADOs), and the mobility of the AN/TPS-77 will
also allow forces to quickly redeploy the systems as needed,” another
official of PAF confirmed.—INP
