FBI detains
Pak Consul Officer
NEW YORK—Mohammad Yunis Qureshi the Assistant Consular at Pakistan
Consulate has been placed under detention by FBI without any formal
charge.
The consular has been behind bar for the fourth straight day at New
Jersey detention center.
It is learnt through reliable sources that Mr. Qureshi is a devout
Muslim and active member of a Tableghi Jumaat based in Alfalah Mosque in
Corona New York whose accounts were seized by Federal authorities last
month and Qureshi also is member of the managing committee of the
Alfalah Mosque.
Alfalah Mosque and Tableeghi Jamaat are under heavy surveillance by the
US authorities.
Reliable sources also contended that younger son of Qureshi is a student
of Madrassa in Karachi and Qureshi was scheduled to leave on the weekend
to Pakistan.
Pakistani diplomats have exhausted all diplomatic and political channels
but American authorities have rejected the request made by Pakistani
diplomats.
The Embassy of Pakistan is of the view that this case falls under New
York consulate jurisdiction while Newark consul officials say the
officer is not protected under Vienna convention.
The veteran respected dedicated and honest official of Abbottabad has
not been officially charged yet and is expected to be visited by counsel
on Monday.
A diplomat while commenting his arrest said we could not protect our own
employee how can we protect others he deplored US authorities attitude
towards a national of one of its so called ‘friend’ and ‘close
