BEIJING—Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will meet his Pakistani counterpart
Shaukat Aziz in Moscow Wednesday to discuss China's plan to help the
earthquake's victims, this was announced by the spokesman of the Chinese
Foreign Ministry Kong Quan here at the weekly news briefing.
The bilateral meeting that is to take place on the sideline of Shanghai
Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit will provide the two countries an
opportunity to discuss their cooperation in carrying out of relief and
reconstructed work in the affected areas, he added.
China, he said as a close friend of Pakistan has great sympathies with
the people of Pakistan and wished to stand by them at this difficult
time.
The strong earthquake raised deep sympathies of the Chinese people and
we provided immediate assistance to Pakistan on the very next day, by
sending a relief and rescue mission to the affected areas, he said
adding, Chinese
government offered $ 6.2 million as an immediate emergency aid to this
effect.
Accordingly relief materials were dispatched to Pakistan through nine
special cargo flights. We have already offered further help and
assistance to the quake's victims, he maintained.
Kong Quan told APP that the fourth SCO meeting at the prime ministers
level will take up the main topic of strengthening economic cooperation
among the member states and it is hoped that they would also discuss the
severity of earthquake in Pakistan as well. I cannot exclude the
possibility of having formal discussion on massive devastation caused by
the earthquake, he said.
To another question, the spokesman said China will send a senior leader
to attend the international donors agencies meeting that is scheduled to
take place in Geneva tomorrow. The Chinese side, during the meeting will
brief the participants of their relief plan quake's victims in Pakistan.
This, he said will be an important meeting to take practical steps to
help for alleviating the sufferings of the affected people. He said the
earthquake is a challenge to the international community and it was the
time to strengthen their cooperation to face it with collective spirit
and overcome the difficulties.
According to the SCO's sources here, despite the pre-occupation at home
due to the devastating earthquake Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz will make
a day-long visit to Moscow on October 26 to attend the SCO Summit. This
reflects the importance it attaches to the SCO process, as an observer.
Meanwhile, about 150 representatives of some leading Chinese companies
at their meeting held at the Pakistan's embassy assured their all
possible financial and material support to the quake's victims. They
also made handsome donations in cash on the spot.
The meeting was jointly arranged by the Resident Mission of UNDP in
Beijing, All-China industry and commerce Union, Guangcai leadership
group and the Pakistan embassy. UNDP's Chief Khalid Malik and Pakistan
Ambassador Salman Bashir briefed the participants about the natural
calamity that hit Pakistan on Oct. 8 and its devastating impact on the
lives of the people. Malik proposed that there should be China's
consortium for participating in the reconstruction work in the quake-hit
areas. A Chinese Vice Minster who attended the meeting agreed to the
proposal and hoped necessary modalities to this effect would be
finalized soon.
