Aftershocks rattle quake-hit areas again
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD—An earthquake measuring 5.9 to six on the Richter scale rocked
different parts of Pakistan including Islamabad on Sunday night forcing
people to scamper out of their houses. There were no immediate reports
of injuries or damage to properties. The mountainous cities today’s
quake sent tremors to including Peshawar, Mansehra, Basham and Gilgat.
With the latest quake jolts the people who had hardly begun to recover
from the pain of the earthquake of October’s first week, are now
experiencing increased panic. Severe tremors of 6.0 magnetite on Richter
scale jolted Islamabad and Rawalpindi at around 8:07 p.m adding more to
the fright and fear amongst the people of the twin cities.
Two moderate aftershocks rattled Pakistan’s northern areas earlier in
the day. Two tremors of 5.2 hit Mansehra town in North West frontier
province. The people should remove confusion from their minds and come
out of fear in view of the fact that frequency of aftershocks is
decreasing gradually and reducing the chances of another major
earthquake to occur in the same region.
“There is nothing to be worried about now as aftershocks has decreased
the chances of any massive earthquake in the same region in the near
future,” said Director General Metrological Department Qamar Zaman
Chaudhry in a press conference here Sunday. He requested the people not
to pay any heed to rumours about earthquake as there is no technology or
instrumentation available in the world which can predict earthquakes
with specific date, time and place. |
