Davenport sets up Schnyder Zurich Open finale
ZURICH—Lindsay Davenport will face Patty Schnyder in the final of the
Zurich Open on Sunday after a 6-0 6-4 win over Anastasia Myskina.
Earlier Schnyder ended the impressive run of 17-year-old Ana Ivanovic
with an easy 6-2 6-1 victory.
Davenport’s triumph maintained her 100% record in semi-finals this
season - she has won all 10 she has taken part in.
Her serve proved too much for Myskina in the opening set and she held
off a more resilient opponent in the second.
In the earlier semi-final, Schnyder took her time to dampen Ivanovic’s
enthusiasm, saving a break point before breaking her opponent’s serve at
the third attempt.
After that, the Serb youngster struggled to keep the ball in court.
“I was happy with my performance and I was able to overcome her hard
hitting,” said Schnyder afterwards.
“The first four to five games I had to stick with her pace and her hard
serves. She hit some clever shots, like slower ones to my backhand.
“But then I stepped up a bit, I played more aggressive, I made her run
more and she completely lost it”.
The sixth seeded Swiss won her home-town event in 2002 and reached the
final despite complaining about the court, the balls and the lack of
support from the home fans.
Schnyder began tentatively and allowed Ivanovic to dictate play in the
early stages.
But once the Swiss had saved a break point against her with a thundering
forehand in the fourth game, she broke Ivanovic to lead 3-2.
The Serb struggled after that, often under-hitting and making a
succession of unforced errors.
Schnyder mixed her game up well with lobs, slice, drop-shots and took
the set when her opponent put an easy volley into the net.
The loss of the set appeared to take the fight out of Ivanovic and
Schnyder charged through the second with ease.—Agencies
