PMA calls for anti-tetanus immunization in AJK

ISLAMABAD—Secretary General Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), Dr. Sher Shah Syed has urged upon the government and relief agencies to take immediate steps to ensure the provision and administration of anti-tetanus vaccine in earthquake affected areas of NWFP and AJK.
Speaking at the press conference here on Friday he said that large number earthquake survivors were infected with tetanus due to open wounds and an even large number were at the risk of contracting the disease. There was a severe shortage of anti-tetanus vaccine in areas that had been hit worst by last week’s earthquake. He demanded ample supplies of the vaccine to NWFP and AJK.
He stated that HRDN and Tarqee Trust had made two hospitals fully functional in Mansehra with diagnosis and surgical facilities. District Hospital Mansehra and a non profit medical centre being run by a local organization called, Kids Blood Diseases Organisation (KBDO) have treated hundreds of serious patients in the aftermath of the earthquake. Both Hospitals are now equipped with all necessary diagnostic and emergency facilities as well as supplies. A team of PMA doctors has worked voluntarily round the clock to provide medical aid to people brought in from all parts of AJK and Hazara
President of Punjab Medical Association, Dr. Faheem stated on the occasion that we praise the role of Edhi Foundation in running efficient ambulance service and providing relief goods to earthquake affected areas. He demanded the government to assist the affectees with cash of one thousand to each to fulfill their traveling problems and such as their requirements they need.
Executive Director HRDN, Azhar Saeed and Chief Executive of Taraqee Foundation was also at the Occasion and stated that government should provide immediate loan to the effectees for their rehabilitation. They stated that the process of reconstruction, including water supply and sanitation facilities should begin as soon as possible
