China mulls
to increase relief aid to Pakistan

BEIJING—China is prepared to increase relief aid to Pakistan, for
alleviating the sufferings of the earthquake victims. This was stated by
the spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Kong Quan here Tuesday at
weekly news briefing.
After the massive disaster, China promptly dispatched rescue team and
relief goods to Pakistan, he said adding, the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao
issued immediate instructions for making the emergency aid available to
the affected people. About 200 tonnes material including tents, blankets
and medicines have already been provided in accordance with the
requirements, received from the Government of Pakistan, he added.
The spokesman said “We are glad to see that under the assistance of
international community, Pakistani people are sparing no efforts in
disaster relief”. He said that he strongly believe that under the
leadership of President Musharraf and the Government, Pakistani people
will surely be able to overcome the difficulties and rebuild their
homeland.
Meanwhile, a relief consignment of 90 tonnes was airlifted Tuesday
through special cargo flight. This donation was made by China Red Cross
Society and the Communist Party of China (CPC). The campaign to collect
donations has been stepped up all over China in order to actively
participate in relief and reconstruction operation in Pakistan.
The donations are coming up from individuals, State-owned and the
private companies, said Pakistan Ambassador Salman Bashir. He told APP
that the Chinese assistance up till now has reached worth more than
dollar 12 million. The Chinese government and the Chinese companies have
pledged more aid for the relief and rehabilitation work in Pakistan.
In addition to $6.2 million official grant, substantial contribution has
been made by the Chinese Defence Ministry, China’s Red Cross, and
Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with foreign countries and
China North Industries Corporation. The donations were also being give
by the Pakistanis, residing in various parts of China.
