USS Pearl Harbour arrives with more relief supplies

KARACHI—Another US ship ferrying heavy machinery and other earthquake relief equipment and supplies landed in Karachi on Tuesday. The machinery will be immediately off-loaded to assist victims of devastating October 8 earthquake the worst in country’s history. “At this difficult time, the United States stands with the people of Pakistan in their hour of need, just as they stood with us and offered assistance after Hurricane Katrina,” said US Consul General Mary Witt. “Our hearts go out to the victims of this terrible tragedy”.
Mary Witt handed over the goods to Captain Asif of Pakistan Navy. Talking to media, Captain Asif thanked the US for their support and aid. “The United States and the people of Pakistan share a long and historic friendship. We are honored to be able to assist both a friend and will remain an important ally,” Witt said. “In America, we are seeing the reports of thousands dead and millions now suffering and made homeless; we are doing as much as possible to help”.
Another US ship USS Pearl Harbour arrived at Karachi Port on Tuesday carrying heavy machinery which is used to remove rubble, and reconstruct and reopen blocked roads. US Counsel General in Karachi Mary Witt handed over the machinery and other goods to the representative of Pakistan Navy, Captain Shahid at Karachi Port Trust. The machinery is expected to be dispatched to the quake affected areas of NWFP and Azad Kashmir within next 24 hours.
Talking to newsmen on the occasion, US counsel general said that more US ships loaded with relief goods and machinery would also arrive Pakistan soon. She said the US had already sent medicines, and other relief goods to the affected areas, and now this heavy machinery was being handed over to Pakistan Navy which would be used to remove rubble and reconstruct and reopen the blocked roads.
Commander USS Pearl Harbour, Captain Hearten said Pakistan was an important coalition partner of America in war against global terrorism, and it would not be left alone in this hour of trial. The United States on Tuesday sent a field hospital to Pakistan for providing medical assistance to the affected people of quake-hit areas.
A US aircraft carrying the field hospital reached Chaklala Air Base, which will be set up at the affected areas. The United States has also sent heavy engineering machinery through a ship, which will be used to open the blocked roads.
