Shaun Pollock
voted kids favourite cricketer
JOHANNESBURG—Former South African cricket captain Shaun Pollock was
voted the favourite player by children in a national contest that ended
with a gala final here.
The all-rounder was voted as the Favourite Cricket player in that
category at the 2005 Star in U Kids Awards Saturday night, ahead of four
of his national teammates — current captain Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis
voted (ICC player of the year last week), Makhaya Ntini and Andre Nel.
The voting procedure was a rigorous process in which kids from across
the country were invited to vote for their favourite star via SMSs
through the television programme YOTV Wildroom, ballot forms through the
Sunday Times ReadRight and through national theatre group Ster-Kinekor.
Speaking from Sydney, where he is currently with the World XI squad for
the Johnny Walker Super Series Test against Australia, Pollock said: ‘I
feel humbled by the nomination and being voted as the favourite player
by kids.
‘It goes a long way to realise the importance of being seen as a role
model. It is certainly one of my career highlights as a professional
cricketer and I value this award dearly’.
Pollock is the leading South African wicket-taker in both Tests and
One-Day Internationals and has consistently been in the top ten of the
world bowling rankings.—Agencies |
