Aftershocks
may continue for 4 weeks
DM Monitoring
ISLAMABAD—Aftershocks following Saturday’s major earthquake are likely
to continue for three to four weeks. Director General, Met, Dr.
Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudhary said while talking to PTV Thursday. He said,
nearly 70 aftershocks, most of them less then magnitude of 5 were
recorded during last 24 hours. One important shock of moderate intensity
was recorded at 1.24 AM lastnight. Its magnitude was 5.5, he added. DG
Met said, aftershocks will continue, but gradually their frequency will
decrease.
To a question he said, people should not panic because, occurrence of
aftershocks were normal pattern following any major earthquake. After a
major earthquake, aftershocks of moderate frequency are normally
recorded, he added. A positive aspect of aftershocks is that energy
releases through these shocks which is produced by settlement of the
fault. Through this way, energy does not accumulate to become cause of a
big earthquake, he added. To a question he said, there was no system
through which earthquakes could be forecast or any prediction about
earthquake can be made. |
