20 villages wiped out in NWFP

BATTAGRAM—Dozens of people have died after a major earthquake, with reports of 45 to 50 villages being severely damaged and at least 20 villages were wiped out in Battagram in northern areas Saturday.
According to Tehsil nazim Battagram Khanzada Khan more than 20 people were killed by earthquake and more than 300 houses have collapsed in civil bazaar area of Battagram. Officials said heavy casualties were expected in the NWFP, but details were difficult to obtain because telephone lines were down and mobile networks overwhelmed. It was also learnt that Abbottabad complex hospital has been filled with injured and victims were being treated in the premises of the hospital. A part of the Abbottabad hospital was damaged due to earthquake and roads towards the NWFP have been closed and great difficulties being faced in transferring injures from affected areas, it is reported.—Online
