Earthquake disrupts communication system

ISLAMABAD—The massive earthquake that jolted the Federal Capital and
other parts of the country on Saturday also disrupted the communication
system.
There was no incoming and out going calls as most of the phones were
found dead soon after the jolts.
The representatives of cellular phone companies said theearthquake,
measuring 7.6 on Richter Scale, created panic among people who were
calling their near and dear ones to inquire about their safety and
health.
“This disruption in the communication system may be due to excessive
telephone calls by subscribers of Pakistan Telecommunication Company
Limited (PTCL) and mobile phone companies”, they said.
However, they said regularly monitoring of the situation is continuing
and radical step will be taken for the smooth functioning of the telecom
system if there is any damage in the affected areas.
They said if there is any disruption in telecom system in the earthquake
affected areas, it will be restored on priority basis.
When asked a representative of one of the largest cellular company in
the country said all the communication tower and other facilities are
safe and there is no report of any damage. |
