Three suspects
handed over to Britain
ISLAMABAD—In the first case of its kind, three
men were returned to the UK Wednesday morning to
face questioning about the murder of Scottish
school boy Kriss Donald, says a statement issued
by the British High Commission here.
The men have been wanted in connection with the
murder since the offence occurred in March 2004.
But without a formal extradition treaty the
Pakistani authorities were unable to return them
to the UK.
Following lengthy negotiations the Pakistani
authorities amended the 1972 Extradition Act to
allow for the return of the three wanted men,
the statement said.
This return of the three comes at a time when
the British and Pakistani Governments are about
to ratify a formal extradition treaty and once
again demonstrates the close and growing ties
between the two nations.
Speaking on the extradition the British High
Commissioner said: “The murder of Kriss Donald
was a vicious crime against an innocent 15 year
old boy that caused revulsion throughout the UK.
The search for justice in this case continues,
but I’m pleased to be able to say today that we
have moved that process on considerably with the
return of 3 suspects.
This has not been an easy process and has
involved a great deal of hard work including
from the staff at the British High Commission
here in Islamabad, the Strathclyde Police Force
and excellent co-operation and assistance from
the Pakistani authorities”.—Online
