4 given death penalty for bid on President

RAWALPINDI—Four accused involved in assassination bid on President Pervez Musharraf in Rawalpindi have been awarded death terms and life imprisonment to two others. On December 14, 2003 the six accused had planted a bomb beneath a bridge at Jhanda Chechi area of Rawalpindi from where Musharraf’s motorcade was set to pass through. However, the motorcade miraculously passed through the bridge after few moments and the president and his entire motorcade remained safe. Later, following painstaking and unyielding investigation detected four junior officers of the Pakistan Air Force involved in the murder bid. According to well-placed military sources, a military court of PAF, after thorough court proceedings that lasted six months, read out sentences to the accused. A civilian, part of the assassinator’s team, has already been awarded death term by the court. However, those — who have been awarded death terms in the assassination case — can file their appeal against the decision as per law of the Pakistan Air Force.—Agencies
