CPC to hold plenum in Beijing from 8th
Bureau Report
Beijing—The fifth plenary session of the 16th Central Committee of the
Communist Party of China (CPC) will be held in Beijing from October 8 to
11. The decision was made by the Political Bureau of the CPC Central
Committee at a meeting held in Beijing on Thursday. Hu Jintao, general
secretary of the CPC Central Committee, presided over the meeting.
During the meeting, participants also discussed suggestions on the
country’s 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2010) for national economic and
social development. It was agreed at the meeting that China should
maintain a stable and rapid economic growth during the 2006-2010 period,
improve the quality and efficiency of the economic growth, speed up the
strategic adjustment of economic structure, and avoid major ups and
downs for the economy. China should accelerate transforming its ways of
economic growth in the next five years, by developing a recycling
economy and constructing an energy-saving, environment-friendly society.
The nation should improve its capacity of independent innovation, which
shall serve as a key foundation for China’s economic structure
adjustment and transformation of growth ways. In the next five years,
China should pay more attention to social fairness and democracy, and
earnestly solve the problems closely related to the people’s interests.
Development of economy and society, of cities and the countryside, and
of different regions should be more balanced and harmonious in the
2006-2010 period.
The country’s industrial sector shall give support to the development of
the agricultural sector, while the better developed urban areas should
do the same to the underdeveloped rural areas.
In the five years to come, China would persist in its reform toward the
establishment of a socialist market economy and a more vigorous and open
social system, according to the meeting.
