Hey, wasn’t
Pakistan born on 14th August??
“If you say mom that Pakistan was
nowhere on the map of the world before
14th August 1947 and moreover, the
country did not exist even before the
day and we did not fight any battle to
win the country back from any other
country, then how is 14th August our
Independence Day. Shouldn’t we be
celebrating the country’s birthday on
the said day instead?” This was the
question posed by a confused kid to his
mom, here the other day. The mother
stood awestruck and utterly clueless,
not knowing how to respond to the
innocent kid’s very right question.
Alas, our forefathers have failed to
transfer the very concept to their kids
who are our parents, that the country
was born on 14th August. Thus, today’s
kids are unconsciously putting facts in
history straight!
In the sub-continent, under the reign of
the Britishers, the very sanctity and
identity of the Muslims as a nation was
under threat. Thus, after a long, long
struggle, our great leaders managed to
get a piece of land where the Muslims
could pracHey, wasn’t Pakistan born on
14th Augusttice their religion as par
their aspirations. Pakistan is the only
country across the globe that was
demanded on the basis of religion. The
struggle was long and one based purely
on ideological facts. However, on 14th
August 1947, all those of the
sub-continent who had shared the dream
of freedom from the British reign, bore
fruit and the Muslims got a separate
homeland to cherish that was fondly
known as Pakistan. The country was
formed in such a way that all the Muslim
majority areas combined to form
Pakistan. Thus, the country was by all
means born on 14th August 1947 while the
Muslims as a nation tasted independence.
It is so sad that 58 years after
Pakistan came into existence, we are
still mistaking it’s birthday for
Independence Day. Many countries got
independence but none was born. Pakistan
is unique in this manner. As God helps
those who help themselves, similarly,
the Lord came to our rescue and at last,
the long seen dream became a reality
through the struggles of our dedicated,
courageous and rather unsung heroes.
Let’s not laugh over the concerns of a
typical school boy and seriously start
working on answers that our parents
failed to convey so that the next 14th
August, we know whether there’s parade
on the day or not and moreover, are
aware that the day is Pakistan’s
birthday, not some Independence Day to
celebrate.—Uzma Zafar
