ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik has demanded of the Afghan government and Nato forces to arrest Taliban commander Maulvi Fazlullah, if he is inside Afghanistan, and hand him over to Pakistan.
He said the government is investigating whether Maulvi Fazlullah is in Fata or in Afghanistan. The terrorists are using the Bajaur-Kunar border for movement between the two countries, he said and added that the Pakistan government was fully supporting Afghanistan in the fight against terrorism and would request the Afghan government to help arrest Maulvi Fazlullah if he was really inside Afghanistan.
He was talking to media persons on Wednesday after launching the E-Enablement system linking all police stations of the capital.
He said it is difficult to prove on the basis of phone calls that Fazlullah is alive and present in Afghanistan, however, investigation is in progress to determine whether he succeeded in fleeing to Afghanistan. “Fazlullah is showing his presence in Afghanistan through a telephone roaming system,” the minister said.
“We stand united in the war on terror, we have no other option but to defeat the terrorists,” he said.
Responding to a question, Malik said the report of the Transparency International placing Pakistan at 42nd position in the list of corrupt countries was not reliable. He said the government strongly objected to the parameters of the survey on which the report was based, adding such reports not only harm the reputation of the country but also hamper investment.
“Steps are being taken to eliminate fake computerised national identity cards, while the National Volunteers Force would be used in place of the reserve force,” he said. The minister said solid steps are being taken to abolish fake computer national identity cards and the DNA would also be included in it, adding the government is thinking of changing CNICs.
Referring to the security situation in the country, he said security arrangements have been further tightened while four heavy scanners would reach Pakistan within two days, which would be installed at important locations. Mobile scanners would also be installed in various cities, he added.
He said computerisation of the policing system was needed for swift flow of information and countering terrorism. Under the E-Enablement, all record and data of police stations have been computerised.
He said under this system all details of terrorists and criminals will be available at each police station of Islamabad. He said all police stations and intelligence agencies would be connected with the network.
The minister said the government is also working on a draft to review the FIR pattern, which is 100-year-old. Under the new amendments to law, common people would be able to register an FIR without any delay and hurdles.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony of E-Enablement of the Islamabad Police, IGP Islamabad Syed Kaleem Imam said computerisation of FIR, Roznamcha, Zimni, challan and other registers is completed and has been made functional in all Capital police stations. “By January 1, 2010, most of the registers will be computerised under this Rs 110.921 million project,” he added.
An information exchange gateway is established and ready for sharing of information with other law-enforcement agencies, as soon as computerisation of other criminal databases materialises.
