Grand alliance possible before polls: Nawaz

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-N President Nawaz Sharif has said a grand alliance could come into being before the next general election, while adding that allies of the present rulers or those who had acted as crutches to the incapable and dishonest government would never be included in the alliance.

He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the PML-N Central Secretariat here on Monday and said the secretariat would play the role of a think-tank for the development of Pakistan. He said he had an experienced and time-tested team which had played an important role in changing the destiny of the country in the past and had a clear-cut strategy for its future.

Nawaz said his party had an agenda and a team for the bright and safe future of Pakistan, especially on the economic front. He urged the youth not to be disappointed as the PML-N would guarantee their bright future. He disclosed that the party had adopted important policies for Overseas Pakistanis in the past and would give an excellent package to them in the future, adding that the great potential inside and outside the country would be utilised. Nawaz said the PML-N would evolve policies under which expatriate Pakistanis would come to the country with confidence and serve the nation through their wealth, experience and talent.

He said people could not forget the faces that had been the allies of Asif Zardari and his government. He said the incumbent government had given the people the ‘gifts’ of worst loadshedding, corruption, terrorism; defamed the Supreme Court; trampled national sovereignty and caused forced disappearances of innocent citizens. He said the allies were even more responsible than the PPP itself for the situation in the country. “How many prime ministers will Asif Zardari sacrifice for the protection of his wealth in Swiss banks received through kickbacks?” Nawaz asked. He said the main question before the nation was when Asif Zardari would himself leave his office.

Nawaz said there is no difference between Pervez Musharraf and Asif Zardari as far as their dictatorial approach to tackle problems is concerned. He said Zardari dissolved the Punjab government and imposed Governor’s Rule within one year of general elections. Nawaz said Zardari had him disqualified from the Dogar courts and violated the written agreements for the restoration of the judiciary, because of which he had to launch a long march on March 15, 2009.

He said from tacking the problem of restoration of judiciary in the Musharraf era, the country was now faced with sustaining the independence of judiciary, which the PPP was out to damage. Nawaz announced that PML-N will not allow any plan or conspiracy against the independent judiciary to succeed.
