VP calls for unity between army, people

BEIJING – Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu on Friday urged authorities to do practical things for the people in a bid to solidify relations between the army, local governments and the people.

Hui made the remarks at the meeting of "double support," referring to the government and people supporting the army, as well as the army supporting the government and people, saying that last year witnessed great achievements in this regard.

Hui urged governments at all levels to give greater support to national defense and the army, and settle issues concerning the family members of demobilized soldiers and officers. The army should actively take part in national construction and disaster relief work, and do practical things for the people's livelihood, he said.

Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has called for further efforts in the development-oriented poverty reduction and reconstruction work in northwest China's Gansu province, an area that has been hit by multiple disasters in recent years.

Hui made the remarks during his two-day inspection tour of the province that ended Thursday. Gansu was affected by the devastating 8.0-magnitude Wenchuan earthquake in May 2008, the 2010 mudslide in Zhouqu, another landslide in Dongxiang in 2011, and severe floods in Chengxian.

During his inspection of the site of a reconstruction project designed to relocate residents uprooted in the disasters, Hui asked officials and workers to strictly manage construction quality.
