Resign or face long march, Punjab lawyers warn PM

LAHORE: Lawyers at a convention organised by the District Bar Association, Lahore, on Sunday demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani due to his conviction in the contempt of court case.

Lawyers from across the Punjab attended the convention held at the Aiwan-e-Adl in Lahore. The convention unanimously passed a resolution calling for Gilani’s resignation. The lawyers threatened to hold a long march if the premier did not honour the apex court’s verdict. They said the ruling of National Assembly speaker Fehmida Mirza in support of PM Gilani was not important.

The convention was attended by vice president of the Lahore Bar Association Malik Faiz Khokhar, secretary general Asad Zaidi, Rawalpindi Bar Association secretary general Imran Ali Malik, Gujrat Bar Association president Qazi Zafrulah, Sargodha Bar Association president Shams Naveed Cheema, Kasur Bar Association secretary Shahid Nadeem and others.

The resolution passed in the convention said PM Gilani stood disqualified after the decision of the apex court, adding the legal community supported the chief justice and would protect independence of the judiciary at all costs.

Lawyer leaders vowed to ensure implementation of all judicial orders and said certain elements wanted to divide the community, but like in the past such attempts would be foiled. They also criticised the use of contemptuous statements and expressions against the judiciary and said responsible persons were guilty of ridiculing the Constitution and law of the land. They also condemned the killing and torture of lawyers in Karachi and Balochistan.
