Reporting of missing children cases

KARACHI - Speakers at a workshop for police awareness and sensitization on handling of the cases of missing and exploited children, held at the Police Training College Saeedabad on Wednesday, agreed to the need for more such efforts as training workshops and seminars to increase police capacity to better respond to the challenges faced in reporting of these cases.

The workshop was organized by the children rights non-governmental organization (NGO) The Roshni Helpline in collaboration with the Police Training College Saeedabad, Karachi Police, with special input from DIG of the Police Training College Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh.

It was part of a collaborative effort between The Roshni Helpline and Capital City Police (CCP), East Zone, under which The Roshni Helpline has displayed a public awareness poster each at notice boards of all police stations of the East zone. The workshop was a way forward towards police awareness raising and sensitization on handling of the cases of missing and exploited children. Overall the Program is aimed at the improving reporting environment and better facilitation of the affected families and parents at the police station level.

More than 40 sub inspectors who are at the college, from different police stations of the city, for refresher courses participated in the workshop.

On the occasion police officers were given tips and guidelines useful in reporting and, registration of missing and exploited children cases, and overall children case handling techniques. They were told that how an improved reporting environment could facilitate the affected families in search and recovery of their missing children, and psychosocially support them to overcome their sense of loss and grief.

Earlier the Roshni Helpline Researcher Shabbir Ahmed briefed the participants of overall state of missing children in Karachi. He said the number of missing children was up at 3090 in 2010 from 2085 in 2009. The data comprised of the cases, which were reported to more than 100 police stations of the city.
