All-Pakistan Ladies Single Badminton starts

PESHAWAR All Pakistan Ladies Badminton Tournament got under way here at Wadood Hall of the Qayyum Sports Complex on Wednesday.

Director General Khyber Pakthunkhwa Sports Board Engineer Khanzeb Khan was the chief guest on this occasion who formally inaugurated the tournament in which the players are competing in two different categories of Ladies Singles and Doubles.

In the opening exhibition doubles match Ghazala and Fariha of Lahore defeated Nida and Mahapara of Islambad in straight sets, the score was 11-5, 11-8 and 12-10. The pair of Ghazala and Fariha gave stunning performance against Nida and Mahapara, hailing from Islamabad. Nida tried her best to get control but she failed against Fariha.

Nida Butt (Islamabad), Arifa (Khyber Pakthunkhwa), Ghazal Saqqid (Punjab), Aqsa (Khyber Pakthunkhwa), Fareeha Imtiaz (Punjab), Mehbara Gul (Punjab), Mehmoona (Punjab), and Alia (Khyber Pakthunkhwa) are the top eight seeding players.

A total of 34 players from Punjab, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Islamabad, FATA, Rawalpindi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are taking part. AJK team comprising (Neelam, Uraj, Nadia, Nisha), Balochistan (Sameena, Nadia, Saba), Islamabad (Nadia Butt, Shehreen, Mahpara Gul), Punjab (Fareeha Imtiaz, Ghazal Sadiq, Mehmona), FATA (Anusha, Beena, Maria), Khyber Pakthunkhwa (Arifa, Aqra, Aqsa, Bushra, Sumbal, Alia, Nayyab, Mehvish, Behasth, Marium will contest in the Ladies Single event.

Director General Khyber Pakthunkhwa Sports Board formally inaugurated the tournament. Organizing Secretary Syed Sadaqat Shah, Secretary Khyber Pakthunkhwa Olympic Association Zulfiqar Butt, Secretary Khyber Pakthunkhwa Badminton Association Amjad Khan and large number of spectators were also present.

Provincial Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar, Provincial Minister for Sports Syed Aqil Shah, Managing Director Bank of Khyber (BoK) and representatives of Happlica Paint would give away the prizes at the presentations ceremony to be held on February 17 at 3.30 p.m.

Syed Sadaqat Shah talking to APP said that all arrangements have been made for the smooth sailing of the tournament besides providing good accommodation to the players and hopefully the tournament would provide a key chance to the players as far as competitive exposures is concerned.

He said trophies, cash prizes would be given to the top players.
