ISLAMABAD – Speakers here at a conference have called for focusing on investing in people, reducing poverty and enhancing Social Justice in the country.
The conference titled "The Roundtable Discussion on Human Development Reports (HDR)" was jointly organized by The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The purpose of the Roundtable was to sensitize the government, policy makers, academics, development partners and others as to the importance of human development.
The conference was attended by Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission Dr Nadeem ul Haq, the Secretaries of the Planning & Development Division and Ministry of Human Rights, the Resident Representative of the UNDP and Director of the Human Development Report Office of the UNDP in New York.
The Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission highlighted the salient features of the new growth framework and pointed out that the new framework is based on four pillars, that is, quality of governance, vibrant markets, creative cities and youth and community. He said that when we put together these four elements we set in motion the dynamics of growth.
He argued that innovation requires knowledge and it can be provided by the universities, therefore, investment in education including higher education is the key to our success.
